What is CCCS of New Hampshire and Vermont?
We’re NOT a collection agency, finance company or bank. We ARE a private, not for profit 501(c) 3, United Way-affiliated organization, committed to helping people in New Hampshire and Vermont take charge of their money. We are members of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, the nation’s largest and longest-serving non-profit credit counseling network. We are also members of the Better Business Bureau of New Hampshire. We are not affiliated with any governmental agency.

Who is eligible for services from CCCS of NH and VT?
All legal residents of New Hampshire and Vermont, regardless of age, income level or any other reason, are welcome to use our services.

How does CCCS help?
1. Free, confidential credit and budget counseling from certified experts
2. Confidential, low-cost debt repayment plans (fees are on a sliding scale, averaging $25 per month)
3. Ongoing community education

Does CCCS make loans?
CCCS does not lend money or arrange loans. Through a Debt Management Program we attempt to show you how to better manage your money and to eliminate bills rather than going further into debt.

What is a Debt Management Program?
Debt Management Programs provide a practical alternative to bankruptcy and help consumers get out of debt. They serve the dual role of helping you repay your debts and helping creditors to receive the money that you owe them.

Does a debt repayment plan mean extended reduced payments?
It might. But that’s just one solution. We work with every client on an individual basis.

What about my living expenses?
CCCS helps you work out a budget based on your income to accommodate your needs, including personal living expenses, which you will pay yourself.

Will my employer know I have gone to CCCS?
All services are confidential. We only notify your Debt Management Program creditors of your involvement with CCCS.

Does CCCS work directly with my creditors?
Yes we can! Creditors are usually glad to work with us and eager to cooperate.

Can you get my creditors to stop or reduce finance charges?
Yes, many creditors do agree to make interest concessions while individuals are enrolled in a Debt Management Program. They do however, reserve the right to grant, amend or revoke any concessions.

What’s in it for my creditors?
Anyone who offers credit prefers borrowers who know how to handle debt—such people are simply far better risks. In many cases, the alternative to CCCS is bankruptcy.

Who pays for CCCS?
Business firms, banks, credit unions and individuals make voluntary, tax-deductible contributions to CCCS.

How long do I stay with CCCS?
There are no fixed periods of time. As soon as you feel comfortable managing your debts on your own, you take over–with continued help from your counselor if needed.

Is CCCS only for low-income people?
Definitely not. Anybody can get into financial trouble, regardless of income. So CCCS is for all New Hampshire and Vermont residents —the poor and not-so-poor, and even the wealthy.

How do I access your services?
Services are offered by appointment at one of our many offices located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. Please visit the locations page for a complete listing of offices and our toll free telephone number.

Who runs CCCS?
The CCCS Board of Directors is a diverse group of volunteers from communities in Vermont and New Hampshire, featuring people from all walks of life and from various occupations.
